Phaistos Disc

This strangely old disc, approximately 3500-4000 years old, is one of the most interesting finds of the Cretan civilization, which is also called the “writing civilization” because it developed 3 different writing systems in its history. The disk, discovered by Federico Halbherr in 1908, was written in a writing system called “Cretan hieroglyphs” and is said to be one of the first examples of this system.
The markings on this clay disc were not drawn by hand, but were printed on the surface with something else, such as a press. That’s why this work, made of two-faced clay with spiral-shaped images on it, is called by some as the ancestor of the printing press, by some as the alphabet, by some as the marriage certificate. After reading both sides, the marriage ceremony of the young girl who has sworn fidelity in front of everyone takes place. It is exhibited in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in Greece.
